about

Roth's arrangement of "In the Bleak Midwinter" comes nearly 116 years after Gustav Holst's melody entitled "Cranham" was first played. Inspired by the phrase "snow on snow" in the poem, a descending bass figure serves as a backdrop to the melody. The simplicity of the arrangement reflects the poignancy of the final lines, where the poor person concludes "what I can I give him? Give him my heart."
